If your t-shirts are looking a bit tired, why not jazz them up with this idea?
Don't these tie dyed ones look great?
| |
To have a go, you'll need some dye, a plain old t-shirt, some marbles, lots of elastic bands, an old washing-up basin and some rubber gloves.
The first thing to do is mark out a pattern on the t-shirt. This is because it can be quite hard to remember where to tie the marbles in.
So, make faint crosses wherever you want the marbles to go.
| |
Underneath each mark, insert a marble, like this...
...gather up the fabric around it and wrap an elastic band several times underneath, to keep the marble in place.
| |
Keep going until each mark has a marble tied in.
Your t-shirt should then look like this!
For a sunburst effect, take another marble and place it in the centre of the t-shirt.
Tie it in the same way that you did the others.
| |
Then take another elastic band, this time without a marble, and tie about 1cm below.
Keep going with extra elastic bands at 1cm distances until you run out of material.
If you like, you can do the same on the back!
Now you're ready to dye.
The first thing to do is make sure your surface and everything around you is well protected because the dye will, of course, stain!
So an apron and rubber gloves, as modelled beautifully here by Fearne, are what you need.

We used a cold dye. Always read the instructions on the packet, as the various brands of dye can have different instructions.
First, dampen the t-shirt and then submerge it into the dye, making sure there are no air bubbles in there. Give it a good squish around, or stir it from time to time, and leave it for about an hour.
Rinse the t-shirt until no more dye comes out of it.
Hang it up to dry - preferably outside. You may want to put a bucket underneath to catch any stray drips.
Leave it for a whole day to dry.

You won't know how it's going to turn out until you've taken out all the marbles and ironed it.
With a bit of luck it should look something like this!
For other ideas, why not try using two colours?
Dye once, then change the position of the marbles and dye again with a different, contrasting colour.

This one has sequins added in between each circle.
Lovely!
